SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite an early 1-0 lead in the first game of the day, Syracuse (18-22, 7-8 ACC) was unable to hold off Duke (23-23, 10-8 ACC) in Saturday's doubleheader as the Blue Devils took 5-1 and 3-2 victories to win the series.
Alexa Romero took both decisions of the day pitching a combined 7.2 innings where she allowed five runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks. Romero (12-7) struck out 10 batters between the two games.
GAME 1
Gabby Teran came out swinging to open the first game with a lead off single before taking third base on a pass ball and a Duke throwing error. Bryce Holmgren wasted no time, scoring the Orange's only run of the game, with an RBI-single to right field.
Romero continued to fire in all cylinders through the first four innings, giving up just one hit to the Blue Devils. Duke found an answer in the fifth inning with three runs on four hits, that started with an RBI-single by Marissa Gagliano. A double by Deja Davis and a single from Rachel Abboud scored the remaining three runs of the inning.
Duke added to its lead with an RBI-single scoring Dominique Salinas, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Holding a 5-1 lead, the Blue Devils allowed a lead off double to Teran before shutting down the final three batters of the game.
GAME 2
Duke carried its momentum from game one, putting up two early runs in the final game of the series. Back-to-back extra-base hits, a triple and double, put the Blue Devils ahead 1-0 before a single brought in the second run.
Syracuse evened up the scoreboard, 2-2, with three-consecutive singles in the bottom of the third from Teran, Holmgren and Alicia Hansen. The difference maker for Duke came in the sixth on Jameson Kavel's second triple of the game, scoring the game winning run from second.
Peyton Schnackenberg started her third game of the season going 4.1 innings for the Orange. She allowed two runs on four hits with a season-best two strikeouts.
