HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team wasn't able to overcome a three-run first inning by Colgate as the Raiders came out on top, 4-2, Wednesday evening in Hamilton, N.Y.
Â
Alicia Hansen came up big for the Orange, registering both of Syracuse's RBIs. Hansen went 2-for-4 with two doubles. Gabby Teran had a 3-for-4 performance, scoring both runs for 'Cuse.
Â
Colgate came out early with four hits in the first inning, including a double and single to lead off. A second single of the frame plated the first two runs before a double down the left field line secured the 3-0 lead for the Raiders. Colgate would add an insurance run in the bottom of the third for a 4-0 lead following a solo homerun.
Â
The Orange threatened several times before scoring, including in the top of the fourth. Alex Acevedo drew her second walk of the game before Lailoni Mayfield singled to left field with two outs. 'Cuse was unable to advance either runner.
Â
Back-to-back bunt singles by Jessica Skladal and Gabby Teran set up a prime scoring opportunity for the Orange in the fifth inning. Following a fielders' choice by Bryce Holmgren, Hansen doubled down the left field line, scoring Teran for Syracuse's first run of the day.
Â
'Cuse challenged deep into the seventh inning, starting with a leadoff single from Teran. A groundout advanced her to second before Hansen hit her second double of the day, scoring an additional run for the Orange. The comeback was cut short as Syracuse hit a ground out and line out to end the came.
Â
Peyton Schnackenberg (0-3) took the loss for the Orange after pitching the first two innings. Schnackenberg faced the first batter of the third inning before Miranda Hearn closed out the game. Hearn had a spectacular relief outing, not allowing a hit and registering three strikeouts.
