SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team's offense exploded as the Orange recorded their fifth run-rule victory of the season with a 10-0 win against Pitt Friday afternoon. Syracuse (19-23, 8-8 ACC) has now won the opening game in four consecutive ACC series.
The series continues tomorrow, Saturday, April 20, with a 1 p.m. first pitch before concluding Sunday at 12 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
Alexa Romero tossed the five-inning complete game for the Orange, tallying her third shutout of the season. Romero (13-7) allowed six hits with four strikeouts taking sole possession of third place on Syracuse's all-time shutout list with 12 in her career.
Gabby Teran led the Orange, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs, one run scored and a stolen base. Alexis Kaiser added three RBIs of her own following a two-run home run and an RBI-single.
"I just think we were aggressive early today," said head coach Shannon Doepking. "It's something we talked about a lot. Just compete – throw punches early. I think that's what you saw. We put ourselves in a good position where little things were able to score runs."
All 10 of the 'Cuse runs came in the first three innings of the game, including a four run opening frame. Gabby Teran hit her ninth leadoff single of the season, eventually advancing to second on a Pitt fielding error. An RBI-single from Lailoni Mayfield scored Teran. The Orange continued to take advantage of Pitt's miscues as Mayfield moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring on the Panthers' second error of the inning. Neli Casares-Maher reached on the error, setting up a two run homer from Alexis Kaiser for the 4-0 lead.
After taking a 5-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI-single from Teran, Syracuse put themselves in position for the run-rule victory following a five-run third inning. With two outs, Alex Acevedo singled to center field prior to Casares-Maher drawing a full count walk. Kaiser notched an RBI-single before Carideo loaded the bases with a fielders' choice. Hannah Dossett became the fourth 'Cuse player to hit an RBI with a double down the left field line. Teran's third hit of the day closed out the inning and brought across the final two runs of the game.
Pitt threatened numerous times, including loading the bases in the first inning with two singles and a hit by pitch. The Panthers put two on the base paths in the second, but Romero continued to shut them down forcing a fielders' choice and pop up to close out the inning.
