SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Some of the most decorated players in Syracuse women's tennis history said their goodbyes on Senior Day Sunday inside Drumlins Country Club.
The 30th-ranked Orange were unable to send their soon-to-be graduates off with a victory, however, suffering a 5-2 loss to No. 27 Miami in the final home match of the season. Syracuse is now 12-9, including 5-7 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Dina Hegab, Gabriela Knutson, Libi Mesh and Maria Tritou all played in their final home matches of their Syracuse careers. Between the group, the seniors tallied 442 combined wins over the last four years and led the program to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Syracuse lost the doubles point to begin the dual. The 90th-ranked pair of Knutson and Ramirez started off strong for the Orange, defeating the 17th-ranked duo in the country by the score of 6-4.
The Orange's other two pairs were defeated, however, as Miami pulled away to take the first point.
In singles, Miami won the first set on four of the six courts. Hegab and No. 82 Ramirez won their first sets for the Orange, keeping Syracuse within striking distance.
The Hurricanes were just too much to handle, though. Miami extended its lead to 3-0 with Sofya Golubovskaya and Mesh each losing in straight sets.
Hegab kept hope alive for the Orange, though, earning the Orange's first point of the day with a straight-set victory on court six.
No. 20 Knutson, meanwhile, was locked in a battle against second-ranked Estela Perez-Somarriba. Despite losing in straight sets, she forced tiebreakers in each, refusing to go down without a fight.
Knutson's loss clinched the dual victory for Miami. Ramirez would go on to pick up the Orange's second point of the day with a three-set victory to close out the match.
