Four Orange Oarsmen Race at Henley Thursday
7/3/2019 12:47:00 PM | Men's Rowing
Syracuse N.Y. – Syracuse University men's rowing team will once again be competing in the world famous Henley Royal Regatta on July 4, 2019. The Orange will be participating in the Visitor's Challenge Cup racing in the intermediate coxless fours.
Last year Syracuse's varsity eight made it to the quarterfinals of the Temple Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta.
Established in March 1839 in Henley-on-Thames, England, Henley takes place on The Straight Course, a 2,112-meter course on River Thames. The Regatta lasts five days, and races are head-to-head with one race per day for each boat.
This year there are 660 total entries, 159 overseas and 501 from England.
"Training and competing at Henley is an enormous asset for our program," assistant coach Jason Elefant said. "This is one of those "bucket list" races that every rower dreams about when they first are introduced to the sport. For our athletes, it is a chance to extend the season after a successful IRA Regatta, and an opportunity to compete in a new boat class and against teams that we don't usually race in the U.S. It's a tremendous cultural exchange to mingle with a lot of British and international organizations out on the racecourse."
The Orange will face A.S.R. Nereus & D.S.R. Laga from the Netherlands on Thursday, at 2:45 p.m. BST (9:45 a.m. EST).
"The exposure for Syracuse is huge," Elefant added. "When we came to the regatta last year, we hadn't been to Henley in over a decade, so not too many people here were familiar with our program or the university. I think that perception changed a lot in the past year. We've had a lot of interest from high school recruits, as well as from British universities such as Oxford and Cambridge looking to attract our rowers for postgraduate degrees. More than anything, we want people to recognize the Orange jerseys and instantly make the connection to Syracuse as a premier program and university."
Fans can watch live or visit the Henley Royal Regatta website for the complete draw and race results.
