Syracuse, N.Y. – Alicea (Kochis) Strodel has been a staple in the Syracuse University women's rowing program for nearly two decades. First as a student-athlete from 1998-2002 where she helped the Orange to three-straight NCAA Championship berths then as an assistant coach when she returned to her alma mater in 2007. Strodel was promoted to associate head coach in 2016.
On Monday, Strodel was announced as the new head coach at the University of Minnesota.
"This is a great opportunity for Alicea and I am excited for her to lead the Minnesota program," Syracuse Head Coach Luke McGee said. "I am grateful for Alicea's support during my first year at Syracuse and I will miss her enthusiasm and commitment to our student-athletes. We look forward to seeing the Minnesota crews on the water next spring, where I am certain they will compete with the same passion and intensity that Alicea instilled at Syracuse."
"Thank you to all the student-athletes, coaches and staff that I have been able to work with for the past 12 years," Strodel said. "All of you have prepared me to take this exciting next step in my career. Coaching at Syracuse, my alma mater, has been so rewarding. I am grateful that I had the opportunity to give back to the program that was incredibly impactful on my personal development."
Strodel worked primarily with Syracuse's varsity four boats and was responsible for recruiting in North America. She has brought four US Junior National Team world medalists to the Orange in the last five years.
During her tenure on the coaching staff, she helped guide the Orange to three-straight NCAA Championship appearances from 2016-2018. In 2016, she coached Syracuse's varsity four to a second-place finish at the world famous Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. Her 2014 varsity four boat ranked as high as No. 10 in the country and was No. 13 the following year.
The 2009 CRCA Mid-Atlantic Assistant Coach of the Year led the Novice 8 to a BIG EAST Championship that same year.
Strodel has served on the All-America Awards committee since 2015 where she is responsible for selecting the All-Region and All-America honorees. From 2009-2016 she was a national pollster for CRCA Region 3.
She joined the women's rowing team as a walk-on in 1998 and earned a seat in the varsity eight by her junior season. Strodel was a two-time CRCA Mid-Atlantic Region Second Team selection and was named the Most Improved Rower by Syracuse in 1999.
As a junior, she rowed in the six seat of the varsity eight that earned the first bid for Syracuse in the NCAA Championship grand final. That year, the Orange went a perfect 8-0, won the inaugural BIG EAST Challenge and placed third at Eastern Sprints.
Strodel inherits a team that ranked as high as No. 16 in the US Rowing/CRCA Poll and placed eighth at the Big Ten Championships in May.
