ORANGE SET TO FINISH PRESEASON WITH SCRIMMAGE AGAINST CORNELL
SYRACUSE, NY – The Syracuse volleyball team just started classes on Monday but have been on campus for weeks preparing for the season. The Orange gear up for the 2019 season with an exhibition match this Saturday, Aug. 31 at 5 p.m. against Cornell in the Women's Building. Admission is free for this and all home volleyball matches.
Scouting Cornell
The Big Red finished 14-11 last season and 3rd in the Ivy League under head coach Trudy Vande Berg. The team, led by Carla Sganderlla, tallied 1199 kills on the season, compared to 1038 opponent attacks. Jillienne Bennett returns this season for her junior campaign after recording 173 kills in 2018.
Orange Outlook
The 2019 Syracuse women's volleyball team is composed of 13 players and is led by seniors Kendra Lukacs and Aliah Bowllan. The Orange finished 2018 with a 19-9 record, earning their first bid to the NCAA Tournament, as well as their first tournament victory in program history. ACC Freshman of the Year Polina Shemanova returns for her sophomore season with the Orange after leading the squad in kills (447) and digs (282) in 2018. Six freshman will join the fold this season.
Head Coach Leonid Yelin enters his eighth season with the Orange 12 wins shy of 600 career wins (588-257). Yelin has won 108 matches here at Syracuse.

Sophomores: Polina Shemanova, Elena Karakasi

Syracuse opens the 2019 regular season against Baylor at Sep. 5, at 5 p.m. at the UW Field House in Madison, WI.
