SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Laura Graziosi was once again the overtime hero at J.S. Coyne Stadium on Friday night with a goal in the 66th minute to lift No. 23 Syracuse past No. 14 Saint Joseph's. The Orange improve to 4-1 on the season while head coach Ange Bradley secures her 200th victory at Syracuse.
Charlotte de Vries gave the Orange a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when she scored, unassisted, after weaving through the circle from the top of the key on a Syracuse corner. It marked her team-leading sixth goal of the season for the Wayne, Pa., native. The Orange took a one-goal lead into halftime, their first halftime lead of the season.
Four minutes into the third quarter, Saint Joseph's evened the score when Emily Peters tipped in a shot by Kate Blincoe on the Hawks' only penalty corner of the frame. Saint Joseph's edged Syracuse 4-3 in second half shots but neither team found the back of the goal as time ran down. 'Cuse fended off two SJU corners in the final minute of regulation to send the Orange to overtime at J.S. Coyne Stadium for the second consecutive game.
After a back-and-forth battle through the first five minutes of overtime, Syracuse had a corner opportunity. Graziosi was fed the insertion by SJ Quigley and made the decision to fire a shot up the middle that snuck past Saint Joseph's goalkeeper, Victoria Kammerinke, to give 'Cuse the win.
Sarah Sinck earned the win in goal after relieving Syracuse starter Syd Taylor in the beginning of the fourth quarter. De Vries had a team-high five shots, four on goal, while Graziosi and Sarah Luby also recorded multi-shot games.
Syracuse outshot the opposition 13-4 but the Hawks edged the Orange 3-2 in penalty corners.
The win marked Bradley's 200th at the helm of the Syracuse program. She has amassed a 200-56 record in 13 seasons with the Orange, highlighted by guiding her squad to the 2015 National Championship, the first by a women's team in Syracuse history.
The Orange hit the road to face Bucknell (2-2) at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15, where Bucknell looks for its first home win of the season. Syracuse will return home to face No. 6 Virginia on ACC Network Friday, Sept. 20 at 4:30 p.m.
