Orange Take 4-1 Victory Over Montreal

SYRACUSE, NY. – The Syracuse ice hockey team opened its season on Sunday with a 4-1 exhibition victory over Montreal at the Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange saw production from up and down the lineup, with goals coming from senior Savannah Rennie, freshman Madison Beishuizen, and juniors Emma Polaski and Jessica DiGirolamo. Three of Syracuse's goals were scored on the power play.
Â
"Today was huge just to see how the players responded to playing against people in different colored jerseys," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "Overall, today was good. We can tell we need some work but that's to be expected in the first game."
Â
The special teams were working in excess today as both teams combined for 10 power plays. 'Cuse's power-play squads made their opportunities count, as Polaski, Rennie and DiGirolamo all scored while the Carabins were a player down.
Â
"We've had minimal practice time so we really just started working on the power play, but maybe we should leave it alone," Flanagan said. "We were opportunistic for sure, and that's good."
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a mostly quiet first period that saw Syracuse outshoot Montreal 15-9 (8-6 SOG), the Orange power-play lines clicked early into the second and went on to capitalize on Montreal's penalties. Rennie opened scoring two minutes into period number two when senior Allie Olnowich slid the puck to the right side of the congested goalmouth which allowed Rennie to burry the opening goal.
Â
Polaski would sound the horn a minute later from the edge of the right circle after sophomore Lauren Bellefontaine and DiGirolamo worked the puck to her stick. Syracuse added the final goal of the period six minutes later when DiGirolamo sniped one in from just in front of the left half of the blue line.
Â
At the start of the third period, Montreal quickly closed the deficit with a goal from Alexandria Labelle to make it 3-1. However, it was too little, too late for the Carabins as freshman Madison Beishuizen tallied her first goal in a Syracuse sweater with 2:08 left in the final period, chipping in a low shot from just in front of Montreal's Aube Racine.
Â
OF NOTE
The Orange outshot Montreal 61-25 in the game, with 37 of their chances on goal.
Allie Olnowich, Lauren Bellefont, Jessica Digirolamo, Shelby Calof, and Anna Leschyshyn all contributed with assists.
Â
Senior goaltender Ady Cohen and junior goaltender Allison Small split their time evenly between the pipes, switching out halfway through the second period. Cohen had seven saves with no goals allowed, while Small had five saves with one goal allowed.
Â
UP NEXT
The Orange open the regular season on Friday, Sept. 27 when 2018 NCAA National Champion Clarkson comes to town for a 6 p.m. tilt at Tennity Ice Pavilion.
