SYRACUSE, N.Y. – A thrilling season-opener for the defending College Hockey America (CHA) champions ended in a 4-3 loss for the Syracuse Orange. Third-ranked Clarkson came from behind to score two goals in the third period to beat Syracuse in front of 347 fans at the Tennity Ice Pavilion. Syracuse's Kelli Roswell, team captain Linsday Eastwood, and Emma Polaski each scored goals, while 'Cuse goaltender Ady Cohen recorded 20 saves. Rowsell and Eastwood both sounded the horn in the first period. Sophomore center Lauren Bellefontaine dominated at the faceoff dot, recording a game-high 18 victories.
"I was encouraged by a lot of good things that I saw," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "I thought we moved the puck out pretty well through the neutral zone and I liked our forecheck. When we got after it we were effective and forced them to make a lot of mistakes. You look at the positives and there were certainly a lot of bright spots tonight."
The Clarkson second offensive line of Kayla Friesen, Gabrielle David and Ryhen McGill accounted for the Golden Knights' game-tying and go-ahead goals in the third period. Friesen scored the game-winner, assisted by McGill and David, with 9:25 remaining in the third period. The Golden Knights had tied the game seven minutes earlier when David tallied a goal assisted by Friesen and McGIll at 3:35.
How it happened
In the opening frame, the teams traded goals and closed out the first 20 minutes in a 2-2 tie. Clarkson struck first with a power-play goal by Cait Longergan, who tipped a rebound shot past Cohen with 14:57 remaining in the first period.
Five minutes later Syracuse's Rowswell tied the game at 1-1. Rowswell took a pass at mid-ice from senior Anonda Hoppner and carried the puck into the Clarkson zone on the left side of the ice before dekeing through the legs of the defender to create a one-on-one opportunity. Rowswell then sent a floater over Clarkson keeper Marie-Pier Coulombe's right shoulder to tie things up.
Clarkson responded 56 seconds later on a goal by Elizabeth Giguere with 8:54 left in the first period. Eastwood then brought the game back even at 2-2 after firing a shot from the right side of the blue line that sailed over Coulombe's right shoulder for the final tally of the first period.
Twenty four seconds into the second period Syracuse's Polaski gave the Orange a 3-2 lead on a shot from the right side of the goal. It was the only goal in the second stanza but ultimately wasn't enough as Clarkson found the back of the net twice in the third period.
