After a thrilling start to the new year, the Syracuse women's basketball team is back in action Sunday afternoon. The Orange host Notre Dame (6-8) Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. on ACC Network with Jenn Hildreth and LaChina Robinson on the call.
It's Girl Scouts Day in the Dome as the Girl Scouts of NYPenn host their annual cookieWOW! event that marks the kickoff of Girl Scouts' cookie season.
Syracuse enters Sunday's matchup 2-32 all-time versus the Irish. The Orange are 1-15 at home against Notre Dame. The last time 'Cuse beat the Irish was March 3, 2002, when the Orange pulled the upset over #21/25 ND, 84-79, in the BIG EAST Tournament. Muffet McGraw, Notre Dame's longtime head coach is 16-0 all-time against Syracuse's Quentin Hillsman.
The Orange are sitting above .500 with a 7-6 record thanks to Thursday's home ACC opener win in overtime. Emily Engstler hit the game-winning shot off an in-bounded pass with .8 seconds to play. It marked the first win over a top-10 opponent for Syracuse since the Orange upset #3/2 South Carolina in the 2016 Elite Eight.
Kiara Lewis leads the team in scoring with 17.0 points per game and poured in a team-best 21 points against the #8 Seminoles on Thursday night. On top of scoring the game-winning point, Engstler tallied 12 points, five rebounds and two blocks, including a block at the three-point line on Florida State's final possession. She leads the ACC in rebounds per game (11.1) and is top-5 in the country in defensive boards per game (9.1). Digna Strautmane added 12 points with four shots from downtown including the game-tying trey with 2.6 to go in regulation.
Notre Dame, the 2019 NCAA National Runner-Up, is 6-8 this season after seeing all five starters from last season's squad be drafted to the WNBA. The Irish are 1-1 in the ACC after winning Thursday's night back-and-forth battle at Pittsburgh, 60-52. Led by Katlyn Gilbert with 14.6 points per game, the Irish have five players averaging double figures this season and are shooting 41.6 percent from the field as a team.
Last time the two met was March 9, 2019, when Notre Dame defeated Syracuse 91-66 in the ACC Tournament Semifinals.
