SYRACUSE, N.Y. –Syracuse volleyball All-American Santita Ebangwese ('19) has been added to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant, head coach Leonid Yelin announced Thursday.
"We are extremely excited to have Santita on our staff," Yelin said. "She came to us as a player and I wish she could still play for us for a few years. She was a star on the court and in the classroom and will be a tremendous addition to our staff, I can't say enough about her."
The Rochester native helped lead the Orange to their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2018 as a senior. In the same season, she earned American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-America honors, was named Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was a CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-American. Ebangwese was also on the All-ACC first team twice and holds Syracuse records for single-season hitting percentage (.425) and career hitting percentage (.351). The middle blocker also ranks top-10 in program history with 567 total blocks, 484 block assists, 83 solo blocks and 1.24 blocks per set.
Ebangwese was a member of the All-ACC Academic Team all four years and in 2019 was named Syracuse University Scholar, the highest undergraduate honor awarded by the university. Her undergraduate major was bioengineering in the School of Engineering.
After an illustrious volleyball career, Ebangwese walked onto the Orange women's soccer team in Spring 2019. She saw action in four games and primarily worked with the newcomers in a mentoring role. Her mentoring abilities will be advantageous for 'Cuse, as the volleyball team will return 11 of 13 rostered players for the 2020 campaign, including eight underclassmen and five former teammates.
