Winston-Salem, N.C. - Trailing 1-0 in the final minute of regulation, Syracuse's Eefke van den Nieuwenhof scored her first career goal on a penalty corner to push the Orange to overtime for the second time this season. Junior SJ Quigley was the hero in the 67th minute when she scored on a pass from Carly Bothof to give Syracuse its second-straight win and first overtime win of the season. Syracuse improves to 3-3 overall and remains 2-2 in the ACC. Monday's 2-1 win over Wake Forest was a non-conference matchup.Â
"I am extremely proud of our team today," Syracuse head coach Ange Bradley said. "To win in OT in a back-to-back series and third game in four days is an incredible display of our teams resilience, grit and competitive desire. The depth within our squad was critical to our teams success this weekend."Â
Wake Forest controlled the first quarter of play outshooting the Orange 10-0 but Syd Taylor was dominant, turning away a career-high five saves as Syracuse's starting goalkeeper. The Orange defense came up clutch to end the first quarter, stopping the Demon Deacons on three-straight penalty corners in the final minute of play to keep Wake Forest off the scoreboard. The Orange momentum picked up as the game continued but neither team was able to score through the first half.Â
Early in the fourth quarter Wake Forest pulled ahead when Nat Friedman scored for a 1-0 lead. Eleanor Winants was credited with the assist for the Demon Deacons. As time dwindled down in the fourth quarter Bradley pulled Taylor from goal to add an extra punch to the Syracuse attack and the plan payed off. Syracuse managed to draw a penalty corner with 22 seconds to go in regulation. Quigley inserted the ball to Charlotte de Vries, who made a quick pass to an open van den Nieuwenhof, who fired a shot past Wake Forest's Ally Butler to tie things at 1-1. It was the first goal of van den Nieuwenhof's career and first penalty corner goal for the Orange in 2020.Â
Syracuse dominated the overtime period and with under four minutes to play Quigley positioned herself in front of an open gap to knock in a pass from Bothof for the win.Â
Wake Forest outshot the Orange 21-8 and had a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners in the non-conference matinee. Taylor's career-high seven saves paired with another impressive performance from the Orange defense was what pushed Syracuse to its second win in four days and third win in the last four games.Â
The Orange return home for a bye week where they will have time to rest, recover and prepare for the regular-season finale on Oct. 30 vs. Louisville. It will be the lone home game of the season for Syracuse.Â
