The Syracuse University women's basketball team (2-0) returns to action Sunday when the No. 22 Orange host Penn State in a Sunday matinee. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on ACC Network with Debbie Antonelli and Jenn Hildreth on the call. It is Syracuse's first of 16 nationally-televised games this season.Â
The Orange and Nittany Lions meet for the 20th time in program history Sunday. Penn State leads the all-time series 16-3 but the Orange have won two of the last three meetings since Syracuse Head Coach Quentin Hillsman took over the 'Cuse sidelines. Sunday will be the first time Hillsman and PSU Head Coach Carolyn Kieger will coach against each other as head coaches and the first time they'll be on opposite sidelines since Kieger was an assistant at Miami from 2008-2014.Â
Syracuse won it's home opener 90-39 on Wednesday against Lincoln. The game was played in the Carmelo K. Anthony Center where freshmen Kamilla Cardoso and Priscilla Williams combined for 49 points each scoring 25 and 24, respectively. It was the first time both top-10 recruits earned a start in their young Syracuse careers. Cardoso was one rebound shy of a double double and added a team-high seven blocks. Williams tied a program record eight three-pointers shooting 8-for-11 from downtown while senior Digna Strautmane had a career-high 13 rebounds. Tiana Mangakahia tallied eight points and eight assists in the game to become the first player in school history to reach the 600 assist plateau.Â
Penn State is 3-0 this season and fresh off a 70-69 win against Rhode Island Thursday night. The Nittany Lions' Makenna Marisa scored at the final buzzer to cap off a 17-point, six assist night for the sophomore. Penn State opened the season with consecutive 30-point wins defeating Coppin State and St. Francis (Pa.) marking the first time PSU opened a season with consecutive 30-point victories in nearly 40 years, dating back to Dec. 2 & 5, 1980.Â
