SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse ice hockey (11-16-2, 9-4-2 CHA) and Lindenwood (5-20-3, 3-12-0 CHA) faced off for the third time this season Friday night and the Orange used the opportunity to take a 3-0 lead in the season series, defeating the Lions 3-2 in front of a crowd of 212. Freshman Madison Beishuizen and sophomore Lauren Bellefontaine scored the Orange's first two before freshman Mae Batherson scored her fourth goal of the season late in the third period to secure the win. The Orange and Lions close out the series tomorrow afternoon at Tennity.
Â
"I thought we did a good job at being aggressive," head coach Paul Flanagan said. "We're generating a lot of offense and getting the puck on our sticks. We're trying not to over analyze things offensively so we're working looking to continue to do what we've been doing. The goals were tough to get tonight but we found a way to win and now it's time to focus on tomorrow."
Â
How it happened:
The Orange came out dominant in the first period against the Lions, recording 14 shots to Lindenwood's three. Midway through the opening period, goaltender Ady Cohen made a big save on a breakaway to keep the score at zero. Junior Emma Polaski led the shooting spree with four of her own. Syracuse managed to stay out of the penalty box in the opening 20, while Lindenwood's Jane Jacobs and Casey Adimey spent two and five minutes, respectively, in the box.
Â
The Syracuse dominance continued into the second. Beishuizen netted her third goal of the year within the first three minutes of play after collecting a rebound from Bellefontaine at the top of the crease. The Orange did not slow down and went up 2-0 after Bellefontaine scored her sixth goal on the season with a tip-in off a low shot from Batherson.
Â
Lindenwood came out looking for a fight in the final period. The Lions snapped the shutout six minutes in when a wide-open Sierra Burt slapped a shot past Cohen thanks to a feed from the corner. Lindenwood added another goal four minutes later to tie things at 2-2 and set up an exciting finish. As the period wound down, Syracuse went on a 5-on-4 power play with 16:29 to play. The skater-up unit worked the puck to Batherson at the point and the freshman sent a rocket over the goalie to give her side the lead. The Lions would play with an empty net for the final minute and a half but 'Cuse turned away their seven shots for the win.
