SYRACUSE, N.Y. - No. 25 Syracuse had a rough day in the office against No. 10 Duke (8-3, 2-1 ACC), the Blue Devils shutting out the Orange, 7-0, Sunday afternoon at Drumlins Country Club. Syracuse (6-2, 1-1 ACC) won just two sets in the defeat and saw Miranda Ramirez, Kim Hansen and Zeynep Erman's winning streaks end. The Orange return to Drumlins Friday at 2:30 p.m. to host Notre Dame.
"I'm very proud of my team," head coach Younes Limam said. "We battled and as a coach that's all you can ask for. On every court we played and competed extremely hard and showed a lot of passion and energy. Credit to Duke, they're a top-10 team for a reason."
How it happened:
Doubles
Syracuse played just two pairs in doubles, the Orange represented by Miranda Ramirez/Guzal Yusupova at No.1 and Kim Hansen/Sofya Treshcheva at No. 2. Ramirez and Yusupova opened with a win at game one before going neck-and-neck with the duo from Duke. Their match was tied at 3-3 before the Blue Devils rallied and won 6-3. Hansen and Treshcheva didn't fair as well. They quickly fell behind 5-2 but managed to sweep game eight to bring the score to 5-3. The push ended there though as their opponents won the ninth game to clinch the doubles point.
Singles
Ramirez was the first to fall in singles, losing 1-6, 2-6 at singles two to No. 80 Meible Chi, snapping her seven-match winning streak. Erman then dropped her match at No. 6 1-6, 3-6. Polina Kozyreva returned to the courts after a brief absence from the lineup and played two sets at No. 5 before being forced to retire while a game up on her opponent.
Sofya Treshcheva then lost in straight 6-4, 6-3 sets at No. 3 to No.48 Margaryta Bilokin. Kim Hansen battled the 30th-ranked Chloe Beck at No. 4 and forced a tiebreak in the opening set, but she couldn't keep the momentum going and lost 7-6 (6), 6-1. No. 1-slotted Guzal Yusupova was the final Orange to wrap up play. Playing Kelly Chen, the seventh-best player in the country, Yusupova went down 7-5, 5-7, 10-6 in a match that had the entire crowd leaning on the edge of their seats.
