THE GAME
- #1 Syracuse faces Johns Hopkins in the latest installment of the rivalry between the sport's greatest programs.
- The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 with Syracuse grad Anish Shroff and Hopkins grad Quint Kessenich on the call Jack McMullen and Kyle Fetterly will broadcast the action on KRock, Cuse.com and the TuneIn App, while WAER will also carry the game.
LOOKING AHEAD
- Orange fans in the greater New York City area are invited to the Orange's Tri-State Weekend Kickoff Event on March 13 before Syracuse faces Rutgers. Details for that event can be found here:Â Tri-State Weekend Kickoff
WHEN #1
-The Syracuse men's lacrosse team has been ranked atop the USILA Poll 98 times, over 20-percent of the time in the poll's history.
- Syracuse has been No. 1 in 98 polls since 1973.
-The Orange is 119-24 (.836) in games when holding the nation's top ranking, including a 53-13 (.820) record under head coach John Desko.
-Since Syracuse joined the ACC, Syracuse's men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, men's cross country, men's soccer and field hockey teams have all spent time as No. 1 in their respective polls, which is 25-percent of Syracuse's teams being ranked No. 1 in their polls.
PURSUING PERFECTION
- A win on Saturday would have Syracuse off to its 19th 5-0 start in program history (101 seasons) and fifth time under Head Coach John Desko (22 years).
- In the last 40 years (1981-pres.) Syracuse has started 5-0 on 10 occasions. The Orange won the national title in four of those 10 seasons and reached Championship Weekend six times after a 5-0 start.
- The most recent 5-0 start was in 2016. Nick Mellen and Andrew Helmer (who redshirted that season) are the only members of the current Orange who have seen the team get off to a 5-0 start.
THE JOHNS HOPKINS SERIES
- College lacrosse's two biggest names, combining for 21 NCAA Championships and 1,907 combined wins, making them the winningnest programs ever, meet for a 59th time.Â
- Johns Hopkins leads the all-time series 30-27-1, but Syracuse has won six of the last 10.Â
- While the series has become an annual regular season highlight, 'Cuse and Hopkins is most known for meeting in May. Syracuse has faced the Blue Jays 13 times in the NCAA Tournament, three more times than any other opponent (Princeton, 10). The programs have faced each other eight times on Championship weekend.
- Due to Carrier Dome scheduling conflicts in 2017 with the NCAA women's basketball tournament, Hopkins is made back-to-back trips to Syracuse after the Orange played two-straight at Homewood (2016, 2017). Before this current stretch, the teams swapped sites every year since SU visited Homewood Field twice in a row in both 1998 and 1999. Syracuse returns to Homewood for the first time since a 2017 OT thriller.
- The Orange defeated the Blue Jays 14-10 last season. Peter Dearth (2-1), Jamie Trimboli (2-1) and Jacob Buttermore (3-0) all had big games for 'Cuse.
- There have been 17 games decided by one goal between Syracuse and Johns Hopkins, including the 2016 and 2017 matchups.
AGAINST THE B1G TEN
- Syracuse enters Saturday's game with a 124-61-2 record all-time against the six current members of the Big Ten.
- 'Cuse has faced JHU (27-30-1), Penn State (46-11-1, Rutgers (42-9), Maryland (6-11), and Ohio State (2-0). The Orange has never faced Michigan.
- SU will play a Big Ten opponent in back-to-back weeks, when Syracuse heads to Rutgers next week.
TOUGH ON THE RIDE
- Through four games (and his first four starts on attack), Griffin Cook has seven caused turnovers. Since caused turnovers officially became an NCAA statistic in 2010, Cook is just the fourth attackmen in program history have had more than six caused turnovers in an entire season.
- In fact, in the 10 seasons since CTs became an official stat, Cook's total would already tie or beat the SU lead among attackmen in nine of those 10 years.Â
- The highest single-season caused turnover totals among SU attackmen are Cody Jamieson, 9 (2010), Chris Daniello, 8 (2010), Dylan Donahue, 7 (2015). That list is the entirety of attackmen who finished a single season ahead of Cook.
- Cook has the most caused turnovers by an attackman in the country this season.
- Stephen Rehfuss also has four caused turnovers this season, which ranks fourth on the team, and leads all non-faceoff specialists with 15 ground balls.
A WIN AGAINST HOPKINS WOULD...
- Be the program's 917th victory, second all-time behind Johns Hopkins.
- Give Syracuse a 5-0 start for the 19th time in program history (101 seasons) and fifth time under Head Coach John Desko (22 seasons).Â
- Improve SU's record to 71-28 since the start of the 2014 season.
- Move Syracuse to 28-30-1 all-time vs. Johns Hopkins. The Blue Jays once led the series by margins of 12-2-1 and 25-16-1. Since 1931, 'Cuse has only been in within 2 games of .500 vs. the Blue Jays once prior, which was following the 2015 regular season meeting between the programs.
- Give John Desko 258 wins, passing longtime Cornell head coach Richie Moran for sole possession of 18th in NCAA Division I history.
- Give Syracuse its first 5-0 start since 2016 and only 11th 5-0 start in the last 40 years.
