9/30/2020 4:31:00 PM | Volleyball
After a weekend sweep of Pittsburgh to start the 2020 season, the Syracuse University volleyball team is ranked 5th in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll. It marks the first time in program history that the Orange (2-0 overall, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) have been ranked nationally. There are six ACC schools in the top 15 this week.
The Orange beat Pittsburgh 3-2 in the first match on Friday and 3-0 in the second contest on Saturday. It is the first time the Panthers (0-2, 0-2) have been swept in a weekend since the start of the 2017 season. The 2017 campaign is also the last time Pittsburgh lost back-to-back ACC matches.
Outside hitter Polina Shemanova picked up where she left off last season, earning recognition for her volleyball performance. The two-time ACC First Team selection earned the ACC co-Player of the Week after leading Syracuse in the sweep of Pittsburgh. In Syracuse's two wins against the three-time defending ACC champions Shemanova had 28 kills, 28 digs and eight blocks. The junior is approaching the 1,000 career kills milestone. She has 960 through 55 matches. Last season she set the Syracuse single-match record with 36 against Louisville and led the ACC with 485 for the season.
In the 2020 COVID-19 impacted season, approximately 50 teams are competing.
