SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Marina Markova led Syracuse in a sweep of Clemson on Sunday in the Women's Building. The St. Petersburg, Russia native had 13 kills, six blocks, four digs and two service aces in the 3-0 victory.
"We played to our level today," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "We are obviously very satisfied with the result. A lot of players had a great defensive game, which helped us generate strong offense. We need to take the momentum from this win into next weekend on the road."
Senior Polina Shemanova set the tone at the start of the match, serving five consecutive points for the Orange (15-7 overall, 4-6 ACC), who led the entire set. Markova had six kills and two blocks leading the Orange to a 25-17 win against the Tigers (11-10, 3-7).
The teams battled back and forth in the second set with neither team taking more than a four-point advantage. The Orange trailed, 18-14, before using an 11-4 run to come back to win the set, 25-20. Senior Elena Karakasi and sophomore Lauren Hogan each had three serves that led to Syracuse points in the run.
In the third set, sophomore Naomi Franco put away a kill to give the Orange a 13-12 advantage and spark a 13-7 run to close out the set, 25-19, and the match.
Shemanova finished with eight digs and seven kills and Hogan contributed 13 digs. Junior Abby Casiano recorded six kills and five blocks.

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
