Syracuse battled Miami in four sets on Friday night at the Knight Sports Complex, losing to the Hurricanes 3-1. Orange junior Marina Markova led the offense with 20 kills and 19 digs. She also had three blocks.
"This was a good match," said head coach Leonid Yelin. "I saw improvements from our team across the board. Naomi played very well today, I would love for her to keep producing like that. After we went down in set one, I told the team that we need to play cleaner and stop making silly mistakes. You could definitely see we had that down in set three."
The Orange (15-8 overall, 4-7 ACC) jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first set before a Miami timeout. The Hurricanes answered with a 5-0 run, and Syracuse could not regain control of the set, giving Miami a 1-0 lead. Miami quickly took a 10-2 lead in the second set and won, 25-20.
Syracuse commanded set three, maintaining the lead throughout en route to a 25-18 win.
In the fourth set, the teams battled back and forth through 11 tie scores and three lead changes. A late 4-1 run by the Hurricanes gave Miami the 3-1 match victory.
Junior Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk recorded a season-high .533 hitting percentage and had nine kills. Sophomore Naomi Franco recorded 14 kills, had a .429 hitting percentage and had three blocks. Junior Izzy Plummer added five blocks.
The Orange will play Florida State on Sunday, October 31 at 12 p.m. on ACCNX.
