The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) has named Syracuse's Carolin Hoffmann the Division I Defensive Player of the Week.
Hoffmann's exceptional play in the midfield helped guide Syracuse (8-2, 2-0 ACC) to a pair of shutout wins over No. 5 North Carolina and Columbia at J.S. Coyne Stadium over the weekend. Hoffman scored 'Cuse's third goal in the 5-0 win over the Tar Heels, which was the first time UNC had been shut out since Oct. 2016. Syracuse held the Lions to one shot while taking 22 of their own in Sunday's win over Columbia.
Her play in the midfield slowed the UNC offense that entered the game averaging 4.56 points per game and held the ACC's leading scorer, Erin Matson, without a goal or assists for just the first time this season and first time in ACC play since Oct. 2019
Hoffmann was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday and becomes the first national player of the week since Florine van den Boetzelaer was named National Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 14, 2020.
The Orange ride a six-game win streak into Friday night's home ACC game against No. 15 Wake Forest (5-5, 1-2 ACC) at 6 p.m. Fans can watch live on ACCNX through the ESPN app.
