Orange Headed to 15th NCAA Tournament in Program History
11/7/2021 8:22:00 PM | Field Hockey
The ninth-ranked Syracuse Orange are headed to the NCAA Field Hockey Tournament for the 15th time in program history this weekend. 'Cuse earned one of the Atlantic Coast Conference's four tournament bids. North Carolina won the ACC Tournament on Sunday afternoon to receive the ACC's automatic qualifying bid, while three ACC squads earned an at-large bid.
Syracuse will head to College Park, Md., and will face Penn State in the first round on Friday, Nov. 12. Penn State, the higher seed, is unable to host due to a scheduling conflict so Maryland will host the regional games. Game time is to be determined. The winner of Friday's game will face the winner of Virginia and Maryland on Sunday with a chance to advance to the NCAA Field Hockey Final Four in Ann Arbor, Mich., Nov. 19-21.
Syracuse returns to the NCAA Tournament after missing the 2020 championship, which was played in the Spring of 2021 with a smaller field due to COVID-19. Syracuse has reached the national semifinals four times in program history, and made the national championship game twice, losing in 2014 before returning in 2015 to win the first women's team national title in school history. The 2015 national championship was played in Ann Arbor, the site of this year's final game.
The Orange are 17-13 all-time in NCAA Tournament games. They have qualified for 12 NCAA Tournaments during head coach Ange Bradley's tenure at Syracuse..
