Softball Defeats UIC, Charleston at Garnett/Gold Classic

The Syracuse softball team improved to 4-3 on the season with wins over Illinois Chicago (UIC) and Charleston at the Garnet/Gold Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. on Saturday. The Orange earned a 6-4 win in eight innings in the first game against UIC and rallied late the second game to beat Charleston 4-2. Syracuse finishes the trip to South Carolina with a 2-1 record.Â
Toni Martin and Lailoni Mayfield each homered in the top of the first inning against the Flames to give Syracuse a 2-0 lead. In the top of the second the Orange added another run when Calista Almer doubled to right center to plate Neli Casares-Maher for a 3-0 advantage.Â
UIC scored a run in each of the next innings to make it a 3-2 game. In the top of the sixth Angel Jasso's RBI groundout scored Gabby Teran for a 4-2 lead. The Flames responded in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. In the top of the eighth Geana Torres hit a two-run home run to put Syracuse on top and Alexa Romero closed the door striking out the side to earn the win.Â
Martin went 2-for-4 at the plate and Paris Woods was 2-for-3 with a multi-hit game of her own. Jolie Gustave went three innings in the circle allowing five hits with four strikeouts. Lindsey Hendrix went three innings with five strikeouts before Romero closed the game with five strikeouts in the final two innings of work.Â
In the second game of the day, Syracuse scored first against Charleston. Woods doubled with a full count to score Almer in the bottom of the third. Mayfield singled up the middle in the fourth driving in Martin for a 2-0 lead. The Cougars scored a run in the fifth and sixth to tie the game 2-2. The Orange answered in the bottom of the sixth when Neli Casares-Maher hit a two-run home run to left center field to go ahead 4-2.
Kaia Oliver threw all seven innings allowing just two runs, one earned, on six hits with six strikeouts. Mayfield and Almer both had multi-hit games while Casares-Maher had two RBI.Â
Syracuse improves to 4-3 overall and returns to action at the Villanova Invitational on March 6.Â
