Orange to Play a Pair of Matches in Blacksburg

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Syracuse volleyball will play a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference matches this weekend in Blacksburg, Va. The Orange will battle #23 Georgia Tech on Saturday at 1 pm and host Virginia Tech on Sunday at 1 pm (ACCNX). The Orange (5-5 overall, 5-5 ACC) return to the court after a week off due to positive COVID test in the Clemson program and subsequent contact tracing in the Syracuse volleyball program.
Orange in the ACC
Syracuse currently ranks among the ACC's best in several categories. The Orange average the second-most digs per set (15.81) and the fifth-most blocks per set (2.50) in the conference. The team also ranks third in the league in attacks per set (36.03). Additionally, Lauren Hogan owns the ACC's best mark for digs per set (4.97), good for ninth-best among Division I freshmen. Abby Casiano places fourth in the conference with 1.19 blocks per set and Elena Karakasi dishes out the sixth-most assists per set in the ACC (9.53).
At the Net
Syracuse is 41st nationally and fifth in the ACC in blocker per set, averaging 2.5. Sophomore middle blocker Abby Casiano leads the Orange and is fourth in the ACC with an average of 1.19 blocks per set.
Can You Dig It?
Syracuse ranks second in the ACC in digs per set (15.81). Lauren Hogan owns the best digs per set mark (4.97) in the conference, which ranks 51st in the nation and ninth among all freshmen.
Hogan's Heroics
Freshman Lauren Hogan has a .986 reception percentage. The defensive specialist has successfully received 218 balls and has committed only three errors.
Scouting the Yellow Jackets
The last time out #23 Georgia Tech beat Boston College in straight sets. The Yellow Jackets (9-2) are currently tied with Notre Dame for the conference's best record in ACC competitions. Junior Mariana Brambilla ranks second in the ACC and 19th in the nation with 4.55 kills per set, while sophomore Julia Bergmann is averaging a conference-best 0.55 service aces per set. Georgia Tech the sixth-best hitting percentage (.317) in the country and records the 17th-most kills per set (14.32) in the nation, both of which lead the ACC.
Scouting the Hokies
Last weekend Virginia Tech lost to No. 14 Notre Dame and Florida State, 3-1. Graduate student Kaity Smith leads the Hokies (5-6, 4-6) with 3.12 kills per set, while freshman Brie Postema records 4.55 assists per set and leads the team with 15 service aces.
The Series vs. Georgia Tech
The Orange own a 6-5 margin in the all-time series against the Yellow Jackets. The Orange have won two of the past three matches in the series, including a pair of 3-0 wins in 2018. In the only meeting in 2019, Georgia Tech beat Syracuse, 3-1.
The Series vs. Virginia Tech
In its last four matches against Virginia Tech, Syracuse has only lost one game, the second set in a four-set win in Blacksburg on November 2, 2018. The Orange have won the past two matches against the Hokies in straight sets. VT has a 7-6 advantage in the series.
Last Time Out
Syracuse split a pair of matches at the Women's Building to open the spring season on March 5th and 7th. The Orange lost in a five-set thriller to North Carolina. Senior Yuliia Yastrub and sophomore Abby Casiano paced the Orange attack with 13 kills and junior Elena Karakasi had 43 assists. Defensively, freshman Lauren Hogan had 24 digs. while Yastrub and senior Ella Saada each recorded 18.
The Orange closed the weekend with a five-set win against Clemson. Syracuse struck first winning the first two sets before the Tigers forced a fifth set with wins in the third and fourth sets. The 'Cuse won the match with a fifth-set 16-14 victory. Sophomore Viktoriia Lokhmanchuk and freshman Naomi Franco turned in career performances in the win. Lokhmanchuk led the Orange with a career-high 17 kills and added 12 digs, while Franco had a career-high 15 kills and four blocks.

Syracuse returns home for contests against Wake Forest on Friday, March 26 at 4 p.m. and against Duke on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m. Both matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
