Volleyball Battles UNC in Five Set Loss

The first match of the second part of the 2020-21 Syracuse volleyball season went down to the wire. The Orange battled North Carolina in a five-set match that ended with the Tar Heels winning the fifth set 18-16. Syracuse (4-5 overall, 4-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) won the first set and then bounced back to tie the match and force the fifth after UNC (8-3, 7-2) won the second and third set.
Syracuse senior Yuliia Yastrub and junior Abby Casiano paced the Orange attack with 13 kills and junior Elena Karakasi had 43 assists. Defensively freshman Lauren Hogan had 24 digs and Yastrub and senior Ella Saada each recorded 18.
Syracuse won the first set 25-14 after jumping out to a 10-1 lead and maintaining control for the remainder of the set. North Carolina responded with a 25-18 win in the second set and a 25-21 victory in the third. In the fourth set, the Orange took an early 10-5 lead before UNC tied the match at 13. Then the Orange outscored the Tar Heels 12-6 to earn the fourth set win. The fifth set featured 11 ties, including a 16-16 deadlock before UNC scored the final two points of the match to secure the victory.
Syracuse will return to the court to host Clemson on Sunday, March 5th at Noon at the Women's Building. The match will be streamed live on ACCNX.
