
Field Hockey Hosts Virginia, UNC This Weekend

The Syracuse field hockey team (8-6) is home for a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) games to wrap up the regular season this weekend at J.S. Coyne Stadium. The Orange host No. 13 Virginia at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 16 and No. 1 North Carolina on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. Both games will be televised live on ACCNX through the ESPN app.Â
The Orange are coming off back-to-back overtime losses to No. 5 Louisville and No. 13 Boston College. Syracuse is 3-2 during the spring portion of the 2020-21 season and will play its first home game since Oct. 30, 2020.Â
Syracuse is led by Charlotte de Vries and SJ Quigley who are tied for the team lead in points with 12 each. de Vries has a team-best five goals and two assists while Quigley has four goals and a team-leading four assists. Freshman Emily Streib took the reigns in goal for the Orange this spring and has a 1.32 goals against average (GAA) through her first five starts for the Orange. Sophomore Pleun Lammers has twice been named ACC Offensive Player of the Week this spring and has contributed three Orange goals and an assists in five spring games.Â
Virginia enters Friday's afternoon matchup with a  6-11 overall record and is 2-4 this spring. The Cavaliers are coming off a 3-2 overtime loss against No. 1 North Carolina on April 9. Laura Janssen leads the team with nine goals while Adele Iacobucci has eight goals and one assists to rank second on the team in points (17) . When the two teams met in the fall part of the season in Charlottesville, UVA won both games by a single goal. The first was a 1-0 victory on Oct. 2 and the Cavaliers followed up with a 3-2 overtime win on Oct. 3.Â
North Carolina won the ACC Championship in the fall and holds a 14-1 record entering Sunday's game. The Tar Heels lone loss of the season was in just their second game, a 3-1 rout by Louisville on the road on Oct 2. Since then, UNC has won 13-straight games including back-to-back overtime wins against Duke and Virginia. Erin Matson leads North Carolina with 21 goals and eight assists for an ACC best 50 points. She's recorded a eight game-winning goals this season and has played and started in all 15 games for UNC. Syracuse and UNC played twice during the fall. The first was a 1-0 win for the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill and the second, a 4-3 overtime thriller that went in favor of UNC in the ACC Semifinals on Nov. 6.Â
No fans will be admitted to J.S. Coyne Stadium for this weekend's games.Â
