The Syracuse men's rowing team will make its long-awaited return to the water for a double header race against Navy and George Washington at the Occoquan Reservoir on Fairfax, Va., on Sunday, April 18. The Orange will race head-to-head with Navy beginning at 10 a.m. with the varsity eight followed by the second varsity eight and the varsity four at 10:20 a.m. and 10:50 a.m., respectively. In the afternoon, 'Cuse lines up with GW beginning at 2 p.m. with the varsity eight. The 2V8 and the V4 will follow suit at 2:20 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.Â
"It's been a while since we've lined up against different colored jerseys, and emotions will be high this weekend," Syracuse head coach Dave Reischman said. "Our challenge will be to stay focused on our race plan and execute to the best of our ability."
Navy is undefeated on the season with wins over Drexel and St. Joseph's. The Midshipmen heavyweights began the season with a win over Drexel on March 27 and followed up beating St. Joe's the following weekend on April 5. Annually, the Orange and Midshipmen race with Cornell for the Goes Trophy but due to the Ivy League not competing this spring, the Orange retain the Goes Trophy which was last raced for in 2019.Â
George Washington will also begin its season on Sunday. In the morning session, the Colonials will race the Navy lightweights and Jacksonville in a three-way race to get a race under their belts before facing the Orange in the afternoon.
Syracuse has not raced against an opposing crew since the Cornell Autumn Classic on Nov. 2, 2019, due to the 2020 spring season being canceled because of the COVID-10 pandemic.Â
"We've been going good in practice, but you never know what you have until you hit the racecourse," Reischman added. "We're hoping to learn a lot this weekend to focus our efforts over the next six weeks."Â
There will be no spectators racecourse but fans can watch each of Syracuse's six races streamed live through the team's Facebook page (Facebook.com/CuseMRowing).Â
