
#1 Tar Heels Defeat Orange

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse had its two-match winning streak snapped in a 6-1 loss to No. 1 North Carolina on Friday at the Drumlins Tennis Club.

"Credit to UNC, they are No. 1 in the country for a reason," said Syracuse head coach Younes Limam. "I was very proud of the way we competed."

HOW IT HAPPENED
North Carolina (21-0) won the doubles point, posting wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The No. 4-ranked doubles team in the nation of Sara Daavettila and Cameron Morra defeated Syracuse's Natalie Novotna and Viktoriya, 6-2, at No. 1 doubles, and Makenna Jones and Elizabeth Scotty posted a 6-1 victory over the Orange's No. 2 pairing of Polina Kozyreva and Sofya Treshcheva. Guzal Yusupova and Zeynep Erman were leading the Tar Heels' pair of Fiona Crawley and Reilly Tran, 4-3, when the match was called.

The Tar Heels won the first four singles matches to finish to claim their 39th consecutive victory, dating back to the 2019-20 season. Sophomore Zeynep Erman recorded Syracuse's (6-9, 5-7) point at No. 6 singles. She won the first set, 6-4, and held off a comeback attempt by Anika Yarlagadda in the second set, 7-5.

The final match to conclude was at No. 1 singles, featuring the third-ranked player in the nation in Daavettila and 23rd-ranked Kanapatskaya. Daavettila won the first set, 6-3, but trailed the Orange freshman in the second set. Daavettila came back to win the set, 7-5, to claim the victory.

Syracuse plays its final home match of the regular season on Sunday, April 11 against No. 14 Duke at the Drumlins Tennis Club at 11 a.m. The match will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
