SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Syracuse freshman Viktoriya Kanapatskaya has been selected by the NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Subcommittee to compete in the 2021 NCAA Division I Championships as part of the singles competition. The event will be held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida from May 23-28.
Â
Kanapatskaya will be seeded between nine and 16 in the competition, joining a group of 11 ACC student-athletes that make up the top-16 competitors at the event. She was ranked No. 11 in the latest ITA rankings released on May 5.
Â
Her selection into the event marks the 11th time that Syracuse has sent a student-athlete to the singles competition, joining Kathy Bradford (1987), Erica O'Neill (1994 & 1995), Jana Strnadova (1994-1996), Nicole Strnadova (1995 & 1996), Anna Shkudun (2016), and Gabriela Knutsun (2018 & 2019) as the only Orange to qualify for the singles championship.
Â
Hailing from Minsk, Belarus, Kanapatskaya was named a member of the All-ACC First Team this season, one of two freshmen to be selected to the first team in a vote by the league's head coaches. She last competed on May 7 against Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Team Championship, where she defeated No. 28 Akvilė Paražinskaitė in straight sets. She has a 12-5 record this season playing predominantly at the No. 1 spot.
