Orange Dominate in Season Opener

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Syracuse tennis team swept the doubles play and went on to win five of six singles matches to defeat Army, 6-1, at the Drumlins Tennis Club on Saturday, Jan. 15. The match was the season opener for both squads.

Sophomores Ines Fonte and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya got things off on the right foot with a 6-1 victory at No. 3 doubles, before the freshman duo of Shiori Ito and Miyuka Kimoto posted a 6-3 win at the No. 2 spot. With the doubles point secured, senior Sofya Treschcheva and junior Polina Kozyreva came back to record a 6-4 victory in the No. 1 match.

Syracuse also dominated singles play as Kanapatskaya, Kimoto, Ito, Kozyreva and Fonte recorded victories. Army's lone point came in a three-set victory at the No. 3 spot.

The Orange return to the Drumlins Tennis Center next weekend for a pair of matches. Syracuse hosts Brown on Saturday and Penn State on Sunday. Both matches get underway at 11 a.m. At this time, fans are welcome at the Drumlins Tennis Club for Orange home matches. Admission is free. Fans must wear a mask at all times and follow Syracuse University protocols, which can be found here.
