'Cuse will put its 2-1 record to the test Sunday while Cornell enters its season opener and its first spring match since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Cornell's roster is led by experience, featuring five seniors. The Orange lead the Big Red 18-6 entering the 25th edition of this matchup. The central New York pair last squared off just over two years ago, as the Orange prevailed on Jan. 26, 2020, 5-2. Then freshman Polina Kozyreva and Zeynep Erman each won their third career singles matches in the victory as the Orange opened the 2020 spring season at 3-0. Kozyreva enters this match in a similar standing; the Orange junior has won her first three singles matches of the season for the second time in her career. The Russian native is yet to lose a set in 2022.Â
Syracuse freshman Shiori Ito also carries an undefeated mark into Sunday's clash with Cornell. Ito's spring debut has been a wild one - after rolling to a victory against Army (7-5, 6-2), the freshman notched come-from-behind victories over Brown (3-6, 6-1, 6-0), and Penn State (2-6, 6-3, 6-4). Ito is familiar with the Big Red despite her newcomer status, though. She lost in tiebreakers (6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-10) to Cornell senior Maria Adiconitei in her first match at the collegiate level in September's Columbia Invitational. 'Cuse's freshman then took down Cornell's Alexandra Savu in straight sets at the Buffalo Invitational. Ito will look to continue her spring success on Sunday.
Syracuse was most recently in action against Penn State, falling to the Nittany Lions 5-2 after beginning the season 2-0 with wins over Brown and Army. Following Sunday's match, 'Cuse will hit the road for the first time this season on Feb. 6 when it travels to Philadelphia to face Drexel.
