
Three Orange Earn ACC Academic Honors

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seniors Polina Shemanova and Elena Karakasi, as well as junior Abby Casiano earned 2021 All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Academic Volleyball Team honors. Shemanova earns the honor for the fourth year in a row, while Karakasi and Casiano are first-time honorees.
A dual major in communications & rhetorical studies and linguistics, Shemanova also earned 2021 CoSIDA Academic All-District recognition. The St. Petersburg, Russia native excelled on the court, as well, earning 2021 AVCA East Region and 2021 All-ACC Second team honors. Shemanova finished the season at fourth in the ACC in kills (421) and fifth in service aces (36).
Karakasi is studying nutrition in the David. B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. The Marousi-Athens, Greece native finished the season sixth in conference in assists per set (9.58) and fifth in assists (1,035). Her 1,035 assits ranks fifth on the Orange single-season record list in the during the 25-point scoring format era, which began in 2008. She is eighth on the Syracuse career assists record list with 2,485.
Casiano is majoring in food studies in the David. B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics. The Riverview, Florida native ranked in the top-10 in the ACC in blocks with 109.
