SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Four different goal scorers helped lift No. 12 Syracuse University field hockey to a perfect 9-0 regular season at J.S. Coyne Stadium, knocking off No. 19 Rutgers 4-3 Sunday afternoon, the first unbeaten season at Coyne since 2015.
Prior to the game, the team honored its 10-member senior class: #4 Sam Swart, #7 Quirine Comans, #8 Laura Graziosi, #10 Charlotte de Vries, #15 Marie Sommer, #17 Joy Haarman, #22 SJ Quigley, #31 Pleun Lammers, #32 Sabine van den Eijnden, and #35 Clodagh Ferry.
The No. 12 Orange (14-3) got tallies from Haarman, van den Eijnden, Eefke van den Nieuwenhof, and Willemijn Boogert. Van den Eijnden accounted for an assist as well, while Quigley and de Vries added helpers as well. Brooke Borzymowski made four saves in the win.
Rutgers (7-8) notched three goals, the most an opponent has scored at Coyne Stadium this season. Iris Langejans, Lucy Bannatyne and Indy van Ek all scored. Sophia Howard made four saves in her 55 minutes of work before the Scarlet Knights pulled her for an extra attacker.
How it Happened
Behind the Numbers
On Tip-In Goal: It was the right timing and right position, and the connection was very good with the other forwards. It was an amazing ball from Charlotte (de Vries) and I was in the right position to tip it in the goal.
On Halftime Adjustments: She (HC Ange Bradley) told us and we told ourselves that we had to keep playing our own game, which we did so well on Friday. We really focused on ourselves, keeping our ball speed up and playing together and that's how we can defeat opponents.
Quotables: Charlotte de Vries
On Pass to Joy Haarman: I saw space on the right. In my mind, I always hear our coaches telling me to pull right, I saw an Orange jersey coming up so I swept it across to someone waiting there.
On Balanced Scoring: Honestly, I don't think about scoring. I try to keep play simple and it just kind of happens how it happens. I think in the last few games we've played as a team; it's beautiful hockey and really leads to assists and goals.
Quotables: Head Coach Ange Bradley
On Senior Class: It's a great group. We have such a variety of seniors, some here one year, some here four years, some here five years. Each has interjected themselves and their strengths into our team and our culture. They (the four-year seniors) have gone through a pandemic. It's been a lot and to find a way to comeback, beat number four on Friday night, looking at the volume of work they did and be able to find a way to interject speed back into the game today, there's a lot of resilience there and it means a lot.
