BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – After a full slate of NCAA Division I field hockey, Syracuse University senior forward Charlotte de Vries is currently with USA Field Hockey as the national team prepares for an important Olympic qualifying cycle.
In advance of the upcoming FIH ProLeague slate, de Vries and USA Field Hockey are currently in Buenos Aires, Argentina for a training block. Over the next two weeks, the team will compete in five friendlies: twice each against the senior teams from Argentina and the Netherlands, and once against the Argentina U21 team.
"It's great to be back with this team and in this environment," said de Vries. "I'm always grateful to be able to travel to places like Argentina and play against the best players in the world. The pace of the game challenges me and I'm hopeful that it will help me become a better player."
After arriving in the southern hemisphere on November 29, Team USA will waste little time before action, squaring off with the Argentina senior team on Thursday, December 1 and the U21 team on Friday, December 2.
Team USA will begin its stretch in the FIH ProLeague, which kicked off in early November, this February 2023 with games in both Australia and New Zealand. In an important Olympic Qualifying Cycle for Paris 2024, Team USA begins that journey with the Pan American Games, beginning in late October 2023 in Santiago, Chile.
This fall, de Vries was one of the top scorers for the Orange, hitting a balanced 14 goals and 12 assists for a team second-best 40 points. Starting in all 22 games at forward, de Vries earned NFHCA All-Region First Team honors, as well as Second Team All-ACC plaudits. Over the last four years at Syracuse, de Vries stamped her name in the record books with 99 career points, the sixth-most for an Orange player in program history. Her 40 career goals are also sixth while her 2022 season points total is the 13th-most for a single year.
This fall en route to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and an ACC Tournament semifinal berth, de Vries had three multi-goal games, including a hat trick against No. 25 Monmouth. She later scored a trio of assists against Stanford and at least one point in 15 games this season.
