2/6/2022 7:29:00 PM | Tennis
PHILADELPHIA - Syracuse cruised to a 7-0 victory in its match with Drexel in Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon. The Orange swept all three doubles matches to win the doubles point before taking five of six singles matches in straight sets. 'Cuse takes a 4-1 record into its home matchup with Buffalo on Saturday, Feb. 12.Â
It was all Orange in the first all-time matchup between the two programs. Sophomores Ines Fonte and Viktoriya Kanapatskaya improved to 5-0 on the season in doubles play with a 6-2 win. Junior Polina Kozyreva teamed up with freshman Miyuka Kimoto for the first time and won their doubles match by the same score.Â
Kozyreva continued her dominant streak in singles play, defeating Drexel's Mya Fuentes with ease (6-1, 6-2) for her fifth singles victory. The same can be said about freshman Shiori Ito, who continued her scorching hot start to her career with a 6-0, 6-1 win. Ito and Kozyreva's 5-0 records lead the team, and Miyuka Kimoto follows closely behind with four singles points of her own.Â
Kimoto made her first start out of the No. 1 position against Drexel and proved she was up for the challenge as she prevailed in both sets by a score of 6-4. Kanapatskaya and Sofya Treshcheva continued their strong form from the Cornell match as each earned their second consecutive singles victories. Fonte returned to the win column after a tough loss in tiebreakers last week, coming out on top over Drexel's Aida Garcia Mendez, 6-0, 6-4.Â
Syracuse stands at 4-1 after the win, marking the fifth time in the Younes Limam era that the Orange have won four of their first five. The Orange return to Central New York to begin a three-match homestand that will span two weekends. Buffalo (2-0) is the first team to visit in what will be the 10th all-time matchup between the two universities, and the Orange have won the last five. 'Cuse will face Niagara on Sunday, Feb. 13 before taking on Boston College (Feb. 19) in the ACC opener.Â
At this time, fans are welcome at the Drumlins Tennis Club for Orange home matches. Admission is free. Fans must wear a mask at all times and follow Syracuse University protocols, which can be found at Syracuse/edu/staysafe.
