Dordevic's highlight-reel goal headlines the win
Tucker Dordevic's highlight reel goal provided the exclamation point on a resounding 14-10 win over No. 10 Duke on Saturday in the Dome.
The win is the second-straight and third in Syracuse's last four outings and was by all measures the team's best performance against a ranked opponent on the season. 'Cuse is now 4-4 (1-1 ACC) on the year.
SU held its opposition to 10-or-less goals for the third-straight game, the offense started fast and poured pressure on late in the game to seal it, and Jakob Phaup's second half at the X showed significant improvement to help 'Cuse win every phase of the game.
Dordevic was spectacular again, notching his fifth 5+ goal performance through the team's first eight contests. Six different players scored in the win as well, providing more balance.
Â
Matteo Corsi opened the scoring for the Orange, his first of two goals on the day, followed by a Saam Olexo goal in transition to give 'Cuse a two goal lead five minutes into play. While the Blue Devils fought back to get the game within one late in the fourth quarter, the Orange never trailed in the game.
The 'Cuse lead grew to as much as six in the second quarter, with goals from Dordevic, Brendan Curry, Owen Seebold and Mikey Berkman (2) extending the advantage, but Duke scored four of the next five to inch closer at 8-4 at half and 8-5 early in the third. By the end of the third quarter, the gap had been closed to 10-9.
That's when Dordevic's goal provided the spark and signaled the win. After Landon Clary caused a turnover in the Duke end, a pass sailed downfield to Dordevic who caught it and went between the legs on the run to score.
Dordevic, Curry and Seebold each tacked on one more to deliver the result.
Bobby Gavin made 10 saves in cage, while Nick Caccamo anchored the defense with his third-straight game of three or more caused turnovers. SU out-shot the Blue Devils 61-33, and Phaup won 16-of28 faceoffs, including 10-of-14 in the second half.
The Orange hit the road again for another ACC showdown, at Notre Dame.
