Orange Perform Well at Doc Hosea Invitational
3/27/2022 3:07:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The 13th-ranked Syracuse rowing team opened the 2022 season with each boat advancing to the grand final, including two first place finishes in the heats, at the Doc Hosea Invitational. The Orange varsity 8 and second varsity 8 won their heats by more than 10 seconds each, while the second varsity four and third varsity eight each finished second and the varsity four took third. Due to inclement weather conditions the finals were canceled.
Â
"It was a good Syracuse performance all the way around," said head coach Luke McGee. "Our rowers executed well for the first time down the racecourse. The varsity eight did well and I am excited about the second varsity eight. Their performance shows that we are developing depth in the program. The fours are doing well. It will just take time for them to find the combination that clicks. The third varsity eight navigated the course well in the worst conditions of the day. They will just keep getting better with more experience."
Â
The Doc Hosea Invitational was borne out of the Orange Challenge Cup, which is one of the oldest trophies in women's rowing. Syracuse, Pennsylvania and Northeastern have competed in the Orange Challenge Cup since 1977, with the trophy going to the team that amasses the highest overall point total at the regatta. Â The 2022 Orange Challenge Cup now be awarded on April 30 when Syracuse and Pennsylvania compete at Princeton, based on the Syracuse, Pennsylvania and Northeastern times in the heats on Sunday.
Â
The 18-team field at the competitive early season-regatta included: Bucknell, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Drexel, George Washington, Georgetown, Massachusetts, Michigan State, Navy, Northeastern, Notre Dame, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Rutgers, Temple and Tulsa.
Â
This is the fifth year of the Doc Hosea Invitational and the fourth in a row to take place on the Cooper (the event was on pause in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19). The event was created in memory of longtime U.S. National Rowing Team Doctor, Timothy "Doc" Hosea. Doc made himself available to anyone in rowing who asked for his help, from the National Team down to college, club and high school athletes.

50 YEARS OF SYRACUSE WOMEN'S ATHLETICS
Orange alumni, fans and friends are invited to share in a year-long celebration of 50 years of Syracuse University women's athletics. Events and special recognition of all female student-athletes who have donned the Block S to represent Syracuse University and the Athletics Department since 1971-72 will be held throughout the 2021-22 seasons. As we celebrate this history, we acknowledge those who have gone before us to set the standard we strive to achieve today so we can pave the way for the future. We reflect on the history of women in sport, admire their sacrifices, recognize their contributions and accomplishments, and honor their legacy.
