4/9/2022 6:36:00 PM | Women's Rowing
The Orange varsity eight retained the Elizabeth H. O'Leary Cup with a victory against Radcliffe on Saturday racing on Fish Creek in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The varsity eight posted a time of 6:43.06 while Radcliffe crossed the finish line in 7:01.19. The O'Leary Cup, named for Radcliffe coach Liz O'Leary, has been awarded to the winner of the varsity eight race between Syracuse, Dartmouth and Radcliffe since 2000. The Orange prevailed in the last race against Dartmouth and Radcliffe in 2017, which was at the Clemson Invitational.
Â
The 14th-ranked Orange won three races and finished second in four others. In races against second-ranked Yale and Wisconsin, the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four beat the Badgers and came in second to the Bulldogs. In the final race of the morning session, the 'Cuse second varsity four placed third and the Orange third varsity four took fourth. Against Radcliffe, the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four won their races, while the second varsity four took second and the third varsity eight was third in the last race of the day.
Â
"I was pleased with how the varsity eight and varsity four rowed today," said Orange head coach Luke McGee. "The varsity eight jumped out to an early lead against #2 Yale with an aggressive start. Now we have to keep working to keep our focus within our boat and continue to build our confidence that we can be one of the top crews in the country. They are learning and definitely have better racing ahead this season.
Â
"The varsity four did a good job keeping their composure after they got down to Wisconsin at the start and came back to win that battle. The second varsity boat let the excitement of the moment in the morning get to them and then had a better row in the afternoon. I know they have even stronger races ahead of them this season. The second and third varsity fours fought hard down the course, especially given the last-minute change from a third varsity eight to a third varsity four.
Â
"We feel pretty good about where we are in the season. With the ACC Championships just five weeks away we are excited about the whole squad with the glimpses we have seen in practices and races. We will try to find a little more speed each day and keep the focus on ourselves and in our boats."
