Volleyball Coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam announced the addition of transfer Bre Walp to the Orange roster on Thursday.
Walp, from Portland, Texas joins Syracuse from the sunshine state where she spent the past two years playing for North Florida. During Walp's time with the Ospreys, she set the school's Division I-era single-season blocks record (148) and finished 10th in the country in blocks (reaching as high as third during the 2021 season). While competing in the Atlantic Sun conference (ASUN), Walp earned Defensive Player of the Week honors twice, while also leading the conference in blocks at the end of the 2021 season.
Before Walp's stint at North Florida, she spent two years at Texas-Arlington. At the conclusion of her sophomore season, the middle blocker was named to the 2019 Sun Belt Championship All-Tournament Team after recording 240 kills, 130 blocks, 51 digs, and a hitting percentage of .290.
While attending Gregory Portland High School, Walp was a three-year varsity starter. She earned a handful of accolades, including Second-Team All-District honors (2015, 2016) and All-Academic honors during her junior and senior campaigns. Walp was also a dual sport athlete, playing basketball for three years in addition to volleyball.
Coach Ganesharatnam on Walp:
"We are very excited to add Bre to our roster. She is a very experienced middle blocker who will provide us with much-needed depth in the position. She is very passionate about this opportunity to play her final collegiate season at Syracuse and in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Bre is not just a good volleyball player, she is also a very devoted student with a very positive character. I am confident that she will bring a lot to our program in multiple ways, and we are looking forward to working with her. "
The Orange are set to open their season on the road in Charlotte, N.C., where the team will face Campbell (Aug. 26), Wofford (Aug. 27), and UNC Charlotte (Aug. 27), at the Charlotte Invitational.
