COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a split weekend on the road at two top 15 teams, the Syracuse University field hockey team was ranked 12th in the week five Penn Monto/NFHCA Coaches Poll. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) announced its weekly poll Tuesday morning.
Syracuse (8-3) slid back two spots to 12th for the week five poll. The Orange have been inside the top 15 all season, collecting 424 points this week, just three points adrift of No. 11 Boston College, which Syracuse beat 3-2 in double overtime on Friday.
North Carolina elevated to the number one spot this week with 828 points and 13 first-place votes. Northwestern also bumped up one spot to second with 795 points and 15 first-place votes. Iowa dropped from first to third with 754 points and nine top nods. Duke and Louisville remained at fourth and fifth, respectively earning 742 points and 715 points. Duke had one first-place vote while the Cardinals had three.
Six of the seven ACC teams were ranked again this week: No. 1 North Carolina, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Louisville, No. 8 Virginia, No. 11 Boston College, and No. 12 Syracuse. An additional three 2023 opponents were inside the top 20 this week: No. 13 Harvard, No. 16 Penn State, and No. 20 Cornell.
Syracuse completes its four-game road swing this Sunday, facing a Princeton Tigers team that was ranked as high as 10th in the NFHCA Coaches Poll. Game time at Bedford Field is slated for noon on ESPN+.
The two squads split last season's two meetings - Princeton won 5-1 in New Jersey before the Orange ended the Tigers' 2022 campaign with a 5-2 revenge win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
