Rivalry Alive! Surge Helps Syracuse Defeat Georgetown

Sophomore guard Judah Mintz scored a team-high 25 points, thanks in part to a 13-of-15 effort from the foul line, and Syracuse (7-3) defeated long-time rival Georgetown (5-4), 80-68, on Saturday afternoon. It was the 99th meeting between the Orange and the Hoyas.
Sophomore guard J.J. Starling had his top offensive performance in an Orange jersey with 21 points. Starling was three-of-three on his 3-point attempts and scored 14 of his points after the intermission. Sophomore forward Quadir Copeland tallied 10 of his career-best 14 points in the second half, including a dramatic tip dunk.
The 99th meeting between the two programs attracted 14,193, with a balanced blend of orange and gray, to the Capital One Arena.

WHEN THE GAME WAS DECIDED
After Georgetown cut Syracuse's lead to five with 6:57 remaining in the affair, the Orange put on an 11-2 scoring run. The effort was powered by two made free-throws from Starling, a free throw, slam and a fast break layup from Mintz, a bucket in the paint from junior center Mounir Hima and a slam dunk from Copeland. It created an 11-point Syracuse lead with 5:34 remaining, 69-58. Syracuse would keep a double-digit advantage for the rest of the contest.

LEAD SWAPPING
The Orange and Hoyas traded advantages in the first half, trading the lead 11 times. The contest was knotted on eight occasions in the first 20 minutes.
With the score even at 14-14 at the 13:40 mark, Mintz created a conventional three-point play to break the deadlock. Jay Heath tied things up with a 3-pointer two and a half minutes later, but Mintz responded with five answered points, and the Orange moved ahead, 22-17.

Georgetown cut the Syracuse advantage to 24-23 with 5:33 left in the first half after a layup and dunk from Supreme Cook. Sophomore forward Justin Taylor cashed a 3-pointer with the shot clock running down to increase the Orange edge to 27-23 with 4:24 remaining in the period. The Hoyas' Ismael Massoud made one in the paint and one from beyond the arc to create a 32-31 Georgetown edge with 3:06 left before halftime, the first home-team advantage since the 17:24 mark. With 1:17 before the intermission, Starling and Hima each made baskets in the paint to take a three-point Syracuse advantage, 35-32. Georgetown's Wayne Bristol Jr. made a layup just before halftime and the teams went into the locker room with an Orange edge, 35-34.

THE ORANGE PULL AWAY
Georgetown's Supreme Cook scored the first points after the break with a layup off a turnover. The Orange then strung together nine unanswered points backed by a steal to driving layup from Mintz, a corner three from Starling, and a layup and dunk from sophomore center Maliq Brown to give Syracuse an eight-point lead, 46-38. The Orange advanced their margin to nine with 14:05 left to go after a layup from Brown and two made foul shots from Mintz, 50-41.

After the squads traded points, Starling helped create the first double-digit lead for the Orange by making a pull-up jumper to increase the advantage to 54-44 with 11:23 to go. Syracuse improved its lead to as many as 16 after layups from Starling and Brown made the score 80-64 in the final minute of the game. Â

Syracuse has a short break in the schedule before traveling west to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on Oregon on December 17 in the Sanford Pentagon. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
