Syracuse Loses Narrow Contest Against #4 Clemson
3/5/2023 2:35:00 PM | Softball
CLEMSON, S.C. – Syracuse softball's upset bid of No. 4 Clemson came up short Sunday afternoon, as the Tigers took home the 1-0 win in the series finale. The Orange held the Atlantic Coast Conference's best hitting team to its second lowest run total of the 2023 season.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Madison Knight logged a stellar performance from the circle, tossing her first career complete game while holding the potent Clemson bats to one run and four hits. Senior Yamila Evans logged her first multi-hit performance of the season.Â
"Really proud of the way we competed today," head coach Shannon Doepking said. "Knight really gave us a chance today by holding a really tough offene to four hits. Hats off to Clemson, they are a really good team."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both starters were lights out in the first four innings of the game. Knight kept the Clemson (20-1, 3-0 ACC) offense quiet, throwing four no-hit innings. Clemson starting pitcher Brooke McCubbin tossed four shutout innings, striking out three batters and allowing one hit.
Syracuse's (6-9, 0-3) defense produced a spectacular play to save two-runs in the third inning. With a runner on first and two outs, McKenzie Clark drove a ball to deep center. Junior Angel Jasso tracked the ball to the wall, leaping to rob the home run, keeping the score level at zero.
Clemson scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Reedy Davenport grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Arielle Oda to score the eventual-game winning run, 1-0.
In the top of the seventh, Syracuse put traffic on the base paths. Evans lined a single between third base and shortstop, bringing up Knight as the go-ahead run. Clemson secured the win with a double-play.
UP NEXT:
Syracuse hits the road for its last non-conference tournament of the 2023 season, as the Orange will participate in the Lance Up Invite in Riverside, California from Mar. 10 – Mar. 12. 'Cuse will also play a midweek contest against 2022 Women's College World Series runner-up UCLA on Tuesday, Mar. 14 at 10 p.m. EST.
