SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse softball earned its first home win of the 2023 season, beating Atlantic Coast Conference opponent NC State, 4-2, on Thursday night.Â
Freshman pitcher Madison Knight and freshman outfielder Madelyn Lopez led the Orange to their second ACC win of the season. Knight struck out a career-high seven batters across six innings, allowing one run on three hits. In her first game in the lead-off spot, Lopez went three-for-three with three singles and a walk.Â
"I thought we did a lot of good things, it was a great step in the right direction," said head coach Shannon Doepking. "Today was a good reminder that we are a good team."
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Syracuse (11-17-1, 2-9-1 ACC) bats got started early, scoring the opening run in the first inning. With designated player Taylor Posner on second, infielder Kelly Breen squeezed a single between the shortstop and third baseman, driving Posner home, 1-0.Â
In the fourth, Syracuse doubled its lead with a pair of doubles. Catcher Laila Alves sent a ball into the right field gap. Outfielder Angie Ramos followed with a double off the wall, bringing Alves across the plate, 2-0.Â
The offense found more success in the fifth inning. Lopez got the action started with a single to left field, advancing to second on a fielder's choice. A dropped third strike and fielding error allowed outfielder Angel Jasso to reach first safely and Lopez to advance to third. Breen executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, scoring Lopez, 3-0. With Jasso on third, infielder Tessa Galipeau knocked a line drive into left field, extending her hitting streak to three-games and producing the fourth run, 4-0.Â
NC State (13-25, 4-9) went on a rally in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third base, infielder Hannah Goodwin flew out to right field, allowing outfielder Rebecca Murray to tag up and score, 4-1. Outfielder Katlyn Pavlick drove a single to the outfield, clearing the bases, 4-2. Junior left-handed pitcher Lindsey Hendrix ended the game with a strikeout.Â
Syracuse finished with four runs on seven hits and one error. Five different Syracuse batters recorded hits in the opening game of the NC State series. The all-time series between Syracuse and NC State is now tied at 10.
UP NEXT:
The Orange and Wolfpack are back on the field on Friday, Apr. 7 at 3 p.m. for game two of the series. Admission to Skytop Softball Stadium is free and the game will be streaming live on ACC Network Extra.
