Knight Throws 11th No-Hitter In Program History As Syracuse Beats NC State
4/8/2023 3:25:00 PM | Softball
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman pitcher Madison Knight threw the 11th no-hitter in Syracuse softball history, and the Orange won the series against NC State in a 8-0 run-rule victory on Saturday afternoon. It is the first no-hitter in head coach Shannon Doepking's tenure and first since Alexa Romero no-hit Virginia on March 17, 2018. Knight tied her career-high in strikeouts with seven and walked just two of the 18 hitters she faced.Â
"It's absolutely insane! I couldn't have done it without my teammates behind me and my coaches' support," Knight said after the game. "It's awesome that it just happened."
Syracuse secured its first Atlantic Coast Conference series triumph since last season by scoring eight runs in its first run-rule victory of the year. The eight runs are a high in ACC play this season. Freshman outfielder Madelyn Lopez was a double shy of hitting the second cycle in school history, as the Montgomery, Texas native drove in three runs with a home run, triple and a single.Â
"It's really good to start to see her [Knight] figure some things out," Doepking said. "She's super talented and such an important piece of this team, I'm really happy for her."Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Orange (12-18-1, 3-10-1 ACC)Â offense didn't take long to get going, scoring a pair of runs in the first frame. Lopez reached on a fielding error, moving to second on a fielder's choice. A groundball from sophomore infielder Kelly Breen produced some savvy baserunning, as she reached first safely and Lopez got out of a rundown, staying at second. With two outs, Knight drew a walk, setting up a bases-loaded situation for senior catcher Jude Padilla. Padilla drove a single to left, scoring two runs and providing Syracuse the early lead, 2-0
'Cuse carried the momentum to the second, hitting multiple home runs in an inning for the first time this spring. A walk from infielder Rebecca Clyde set the table for a two-run home run from Lopez, her second on the season, to put the Orange on top 4-0. In the next at-bat, infielder Tessa Galipeau reached on a hit-by-pitch, putting a runner on first for Breen. The Placentia, California native took a ball to deep left-field for the second homer of the frame and her third of the season. It gave Syracuse a 6-0 advantage/
Lopez continued to find success at the plate, lacing an RBI triple down the line for the seventh run of the game in the third inning. Sophomore infielder Tessa Galipeau drove in the final run of the contest with a single.
Syracuse earned the series win by scoring eight runs on ten hits. Breen, Padilla and Lopez all finished with multiple RBIs in the game.
THROWING BLANKS:
Knight limited the Wolfpack (14-26, 5-10) to three baserunners in five innings of work. She yielded two walks in the second and fifth, and hit a batter in the third. Syracuse kept NC State from advancing past first base in the contest.
Looking to secure the no-hitter in the fifth inning, Knight walked the first batter before striking out back-to-back Wolfpack hitters. Lopez made the final out of the no-hitter by catching a fly ball in right field.Â
