SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Only one month until Syracuse University field hockey reports to campus for fall training and head coach Lynn Farquhar, now in her first season at the helm, has announced Sarah Smalley as an addition for the fall.
"An in-state standout, we're excited to keep Sarah's speed, tenacity, and grit in the State of New York!" said Farquhar.
Smalley matriculates to Syracuse from Long Island after playing at East Islip High School for head coach Christopher Veit. Smalley played along the backline as a freshman before taking over a forward position as a sophomore. As a junior and senior, Smalley served as a midfielder. During her time at East Islip, Smalley backed her team to several quarterfinal appearances and a county final showing as a junior, the team's first appearance in 18 years, all while going 40-23 in those four years.
During her senior campaign, Smalley notched 11 goals with six assists to lead the team while accounting for over half the team point total. In her scholastic career, Smalley logged 25 goals with 15 assists, ranking third all-time in program history for career points.
Over the course of her career, Smalley earned several honors and awards, including All-Conference, All-County Honorable Mention, All-County All-Tournament, Newsday Top 50 Players to Watch, Max Field Hockey Northeast Top 40 Players to Watch, All-State and All-Long Island honors, and was a Nexus Nationals Selection in 2021 (U16) and 2022 (U19). She was named team MVP, a Carey Award winner and a White Letter Award winner.
On the club circuit, Smalley played for Long Island Field Hockey under head coaches Mallory Guerin and Danielle Groneman.
Off the pitch, Smalley was a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society.
Smalley ultimately chose Syracuse because she loved the environment and team culture. Goals include growing as a player and as a person while striving at a strong academic institution.
The 2023 Syracuse field hockey schedule will be announced in the coming weeks. Please stay tuned to Cuse.com and the team's social media channels, @CuseFH on both Twitter and Instagram.
