MANAHAWKIN, N.J. – Five Syracuse University field hockey players have been named to the NFHCA Division I Watch List, presented by Victory Sport Tours.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) released its initial list Thursday afternoon. The Watch list consisted of 131 student-athletes from 40 NCAA Division I institutions.
Willemijn Boogert, Charlotte de Vries, Jannemijn Deutman, Aiden Drabick, and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof were among those selected.
The five were key to the Orange opening the 2023 season with a 2-0 record. Boogert started in both games, adding a goal against Vermont in the 9-1 win. A co-captain this year, de Vries notched a goal and an assist in a 6-1 win over Sacred Heart while Drabick kicked off the 'Cuse scoring this year in the same contest. An All-ACC Second Team selection last year, Deutman returned to the pitch in the second game last weekend, aiding to limit Vermont to just one goal. Another co-captain, van den Nieuwenhof logged her first career hat trick in the Vermont win, adding two assists for a career-best eight point effort.
Syracuse, ranked eighth by the NFHCA in the preseason, opens its home slate on Friday afternoon, taking on Monmouth. Push back is set for 4 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium, with Ian Nicholas and Jesse Cook on the call for ACC Network Extra.
From the NFHCA
To be nominated for the 2023 NFHCA Watchlist, student-athletes must have been previously recognized for their outstanding field hockey abilities within the past two years (NFHCA All-Region, NFHCA All-American, All-Conference, Nexus Championship selection, AAU Junior Olympic Games selection, NCAA All-Tournament Team, and/or U.S. National or International Team roster) and the student-athlete's head coach must be an active NFHCA member.
This list does not constitute a nomination or selection to the NFHCA All-Region or All-American teams. Student-athletes not listed on the NFHCA Watchlist may still be nominated for NFHCA All-Region and All-American recognition.
