
#6 Field Hockey Drops ACC Opener at #9 Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – Opening ACC play on Friday night, the No. 6 Syracuse University field hockey team suffered a 4-0 setback at No. 9 Duke.
Syracuse (5-1, 0-1 ACC) allowed just 12 total shots, but managed only six. Myrthe van Bolhuis, Charlotte de Vries and Eefke van den Nieuwenhof each uncorked one shot on goal in the match. Defensively, Syracuse gave up just four corners to the Blue Devils and did not allow a goal on corners.
Duke (5-1, 1-0 ACC) was led by two goals from Alaina McVeigh. Netminder Piper Hampsch made three saves for the Blue Devils. Barb Civitella and Charlie van Oirschot each scored as well.
How it Happened

How it Happened
- The Blue Devils struck first in the ninth minute on a high ball crossed in for Civitella, who was waiting on the back post.
- Van Oirschot made it a 2-0 game for Duke in the 22nd minute, capitalizing off a shot the ricocheted off the post.
- After a scoreless third quarter, McVeigh scored twice in the fourth quarter and five minutes apart, finishing the game with a 4-0 decision.
- Syracuse took six total shots, three of which were on goal. Van Bolhuis had the best scoring chance for Syracuse, blasting a shot from the top of the circle but Hampsch beat her for the save.
- Brooke Borzymowski made three saves on her end of the field, stopping two early in the first quarter.
- Syracuse had three corners, but did not earn a chance after the first 15 minutes of the game.
- Friday's game snapped a 13-game ACC losing streak for the Blue Devils.
- The Orange return to J.S. Coyne Stadium on Sunday for a noon showdown against Wagner.
- It marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the field hockey pitch.
- Sunday's nonconference game is set for ACC Network Extra.
