Syracuse goaltender Allie Kelley set the Syracuse single-game saves record with 65Â in Syracuse's 6-3 loss to #10 St. Lawrence on Tuesday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Kelley also surpassed the 3,000 career saves mark. She entered the game with 2,952 saves in 91 outings. The East Berne, N.Y. native increased her single-season saves mark to 792, which ranks third in Syracuse history.
Â
"Allie is facing a lot of shots right now and she is up to the task," said head coach Britni Smith. "I would like to see us little tougher d-zone to not give up 71 shots but to only have six against, and four of them being on the power play, in a game like that is pretty impressive."
Â
Orange forward Darci Johal tallied three points on a goal and two assists and forward Kate Holmes added two goals. The forwards lead the Orange in scoring this year with 17 points, including eight goals and nine assists each.
Â
In the first period, St. Lawrence scored a pair of goals to open a 2-0 lead on goals by Julia Gosling and Abby Hustler. Syracuse tied the game with two goals in the second period. Forward Darci Johal scored the first on a power play goal 27 seconds into the frame. Alexandria Weiss fed Rachel Teslak a pass along the blue line and Teslak fired a shot from the point which Johal tipped into the net for the score. Less than five minutes later Johal assisted on the game-tying goal when she took a pass from Kambel Beacom at the left circle and passed to Kate Holmes who fired shot from the right circle for the Orange score.
Â
"We had a slow start. We have played a lot of hockey recently with a couple of Tuesday games so I think that showed in the first and it took a little while for us to get our legs under us. I was very happy with our response in the second," Smith said. "I think it would have been easy for us after the first period to give in to it and I thought we did a really good job of a gut check. it was a character response in the second period."
Â
St. Lawrence took tallied the first two goals of the third period to take a 4-2 when McLeod and Gosling scored within two minutes of each other. Holmes cut the lead to one, 4-3, with her second goal of the game corralling the rebound off of her own shot and putting it into the back of the net. Johal set up the goal bringing the puck down the left side and hitting Holmes with a pass right on the crease. St. Lawrence closed out the game with two power play goals in the final seven minutes for the 6-3 final.
Â
The Orange will return to CHA play with a weekend series at Penn State on January 19 and 20.
Â
"The last stretch of non-conference games ia definitely preparing us," Smith said. "We have talked about every game for us now is a playoff game. Our whole focus right now is the road to the playoffs. We have a great group in the locker room who believes, and I believe we have an opportunity ahead of us now with just conference play to get ourselves into that mix. I think we are preparing well and we have a great group of leaders leading the way and we are excited to see what we can do with the second half (of the season)."
