Syracuse battled back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period to force overtime and then played through a scoreless first four and a half minutes of the extra frame until Robert Morris scored the game-winner with 24 seconds left for the win. In the third period, Orange forward Nea Tervonen made the score 3-2 less than six minutes into the frame and then defenseman Kambel Beacom scored her first career goal with one minute left in the third period to force the overtime.
Â
"We have had that resiliency all year, we have the ability to believe and come back in the third. We have to eliminate our second periods. That killed us tonight," said head coach Britni Smith. "Our power play was not good in the second period. We struggled to get any type of set up. I don't think a whole lot changed. I think it just comes down to we just got away from what made us successful."
Â
Syracuse (5-20-2 overall, 2-10-1 College Hockey America) will close the series against Robert Morris (10-15, 7-6) on Saturday, January 27 at 3 pm. All Syracuse fans are invited to 'Skate with the Orange' on Saturday following the 'Otto's Kids Club Day' game. Skating and skate rentals are free for fans of all ages.
Â
In the first period, forward Darci Johal scored a shorthanded goal to give the Orange a 1-0 lead with 2:36 left on the clock. Forward Tatum White took a loose puck in front of the Syracuse crease and sent it down the center of the ice to the RMU blue line where Johal took possession on a breakaway. Johal faked Colonials goalie Maggie Hatch to the right and then put a backhand shot into the top left corner. The Burnaby, British Columbia native has scored a goal in five of the last six games and she leads the team with 10 goals on the year.
Â
In the second period, Robert Morris took a 2-1 lead on back-to-back goals within three minutes of each other and added a third with 17 seconds remaining for a 3-1 advantage. RMU's Catriona Crarer tied the game, 1-1, at the 8:37 mark and then Shailynn Snow put RMU ahead, 2-1, on a goal at 11:20 in the period. Courtney Hall made it 3-1 RMU on a power play goal with 16 seconds remaining in the second.
Â
In the third period, Tervonen cut the RMU lead to one, 3-2, with a goal at the 5:28 mark. Defenseman Alexandria Weiss fed Tervonen at the blue line from the left corner and Tervonen fired a shot into the right corner. The assist is the 12th for Weiss this season, which leads the team. Beacom tied the game, 3-3, on a shot from the left wall that found the far right corner of the goal. White set up the scoring play for her second assist of the game.
Â
Orange goaltender Allie Kelley moved into the second spot on the Syracuse single-season saves record list with her 45 saves. She has 928 in 26 games, 18 behind Lucy Schoedel's 946 in 36 games in 2009-10.
