CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Syracuse men's soccer (6-4-3, 1-2-2 ACC) will make its return to the pitch after an 11-day hiatus when it travels to face Virginia (6-4-3, 2-2-2 ACC) on Saturday, Oct. 19. The match kicks off at 7 p.m. and will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra.
Syracuse can earn four-straight wins for the first time since the 2022 campaign if it earns a victory over the Cavaliers. The Orange are coming off three-consecutive wins over UAlbany (Oct. 1), Notre Dame (Oct. 5), and Providence (Oct. 8).
'Cuse Update
The Orange last played on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at Providence in what served as their final non-conference contest of the season, defeating the Friars, 2-1, on a game-winning goal from Chimere Omeze. The win marked the first time this campaign SU has earned three-straight victories.
Carlos Zambrano opened the game's scoring in the 15th minute, tapping a cross from Braedon Smith into the goal. The score was the first of the Miami, Fla. native's season.
Providence earned an equalizer in the 59th minute, but it did not hold long, as Omeze put the Orange back ahead in the 71st minute. The freshman received a free kick from Elton Chifamba, sending a header to the post, but recovering and striking a rebound into the goal.
SU was scheduled to return home for a final non-ACC match against Loyola University Maryland on Tuesday, Oct. 15, but the match was cancelled due to weather conditions.
Syracuse wrapped its non-conference schedule with a record of 5-2-1, including victories over Colgate (Aug. 22), Niagara (Aug. 25), Canisius (Sept. 17), UAlbany (Oct. 1), and Providence (Oct. 8). The Orange also earned a 2-2 come-from-behind draw with the strong Charlotte 49ers on Aug. 29.
The Orange have had their goals come in a variety of ways this season, as 14 different players have found the back of the net on SU's 21 total goals this campaign. Threadgold, Omeze, and Daniel Burko lead Syracuse with three goals apiece this season.
Scouting the Cavaliers
UVA holds the same record as Syracuse at 6-4-3 through 13 games this campaign. The Cavaliers are 2-2-2 in ACC contests, including victories over Virginia Tech (Oct. 4), 2-1, and Boston College (Oct. 11), 1-0.
Virginia is coming off a comeback victory over American on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at home. The Cavaliers went down two goals just 13 minutes into the match but scored four unanswered to earn a 4-2 victory. With the result, UVA holds a four-match win streak heading into its game against SU.
Virginia is led by junior Nick Dang, who has a team best five goals on the season. A transfer from Lipscomb, the defender was named the 2022 ASUN Freshman of the Year prior to coming to Charlottesville. He has started in each of UVA's 13 games so far this campaign
Series History
Saturday's contest will be the 11th all-time match between the Orange and the Cavaliers, with UVA holding a 5-2 edge in wins in the series. The teams have played to three draws, as well.
'Cuse and Virginia are no strangers to tight matches, as the teams' previous two matches have gone to a penalty shootout in the ACC Tournament. Syracuse edged Virginia in both of those contests, 2-2 (5-3 PKs), and 1-1 (4-3 PKs) in the 2022 and 2023 tournaments, respectively.
The upcoming contest will be the first regular season game played in Charlottesville since the 2021 slate, when Syracuse snagged a 3-1 victory on the road.
Up Next
Syracuse will continue its road stand on Friday, Oct. 25 when it trips to South Carolina to take on the Clemson Tigers. The game is slated to broadcast nationally on ACC Network and will kick off at 8 p.m.
